Registrars With Cheap Domain Name Registrations

There are so many price comparisons out there for cheap domain name registrations but not all of them take the time to actually articulate which domain registrars have truly cheap prices as opposed to having pricing tactics that get you on the upsell.

Most of these registrars who boast of having cheap domain name registrations either have a 2nd year price shocker, or have an add-on ICANN fee separate from the listed price, or have price conditions that only apply to new customers and bulk purchases.

But before we dive into our list of the cheapest domain name registrars, here are the 5 criteria we used to arrive at our list

  1. Regular Registration Price: This is the normal registration price you’ll pay if there were no promos whatsoever.
  2. Renewal Price: This is the normal price that you will pay to renew the domain name after it expires and every other year after that.
  3. Transfer Price: This is the normal price it will take to transfer a domain name from another registrar.
  4. Redemption Fee: This is the price you’ll pay to restore your already expired domain name as long as it’s still redeemable.
  5. Domain Privacy Fee: This is the price you’ll pay for the privacy of your domain’s Whois information.

So, even if a registrar may offer a 1st year registration of $1 but has recurring renewals of $15 in subsequent years, while another registrar has its price at say $9 for both registration and renewals, the latter wins in our book. This is because in 3 years, you’ll have to spend $31 with the first registrar and $27 with the second.

So, we’ve taken the time to compile this list of the best 10 domain registrars with cheap domain name registrations in 2018 (including GoDaddy and Google Domains). Note: This list will be periodically edited and updated as prices change. All the domain name registrars on this list are ICANN accredited.

For a quick side by side comparison between the different registrars, there is a price comparison table at the end of this article. The prices listed in this article are all based on .com registrations only.

NameBright Domain Registrar

NameBright is an ICANN accredited domain registrar. TurnCommerce, the brain behind Namebright, has over 1 million domain names.

Registrations at Namebright have been increasing over the years. Primarily, this stems from the fact that they have partnered with both Dropcatch and Huge Domains who are both in the dropcatching and premium domain industries respectively.

NameBright wins the number 1 spot on our list of cheap domain registrations as you can register a .com domain name for just $8.53 and renew it for the same price. Additionally, if you want to transfer in a domain name from another registrar to your Namebright account, it’ll also cost you $8.53.

If for some reason, your domain name expires without renewal and you want to restore it, this will cost you a redemption fee of $85 (as long as the domain name is still within the redemption period).

However, what stops Namebright from being perfect is the absence of a free domain privacy forever as they only offer free privacy for just the 1st year after which, domain privacy will cost you $2.95 yearly.

Namesilo domain registrar

With over 1.28 million registered domains, Namesilo has come a long way and still remains one of the best domain name registrars for people looking for value.

Winning the number 2 spot on our list of cheap domain name registrations, Namesilo happens to have one of the cheapest and the most transparent pricing structures for domain names. Registering a .com domain name with them will cost you $6.89 at promo price and $8.99 at regular price.

Domain renewal is pegged at $8.99 and at $8.39, you can transfer in a domain from another registrar. The redemption fee for expired domains is at $75, which is 10 dollars cheaper than Namebright.

Namesilo offers free domain privacy for life, another area where Namesilo excels over Namebright.

Moreso, Namesilo has other perks like free domain parking, a thriving marketplace where you can buy premium domain names, and a host of other freebies.

The only thing that Namesilo doesn’t do is that it doesn’t offer any hosting plans. However, that isn’t really a downside as it’s never a good idea to have your domain and hosting at the same place.

A personal favorite of ours, Dynadot is a registrar we’ve come to respect at Folio365. This is because Dynadot practically excels at everything.

Taking up the number 3 spot on our list of domain registrars with cheap domain name registrations, .com registrations at Dynadot can be done at the promo price of $6.99. Devoid of that, normal registrations, renewals and transfers are all pegged at an affordable price of $8.99

Restoring a domain name at Dynadot will cost you a redemption fee of $69.99, which is five dollars cheaper than Namesilo and fifteen dollars cheaper than Namebright.

With a clean and robust platform, a thriving marketplace, a domain forum and several other tools and freebies, Dynadot is truly one of the best domain registrars you can find for cheap domain registrations..

Moniker domain registrar

Alongside GoDaddy, Moniker happens to be one of the giants in the domain name industry. But unlike GoDaddy, Moniker’s offerings are way cheaper.

Making it to the 5th position on our list is a bit of a surprise as most big domain companies don’t mix well with cheap prices. However, Moniker pulls it off by offering both .com registrations and transfers for the promo price of $8.39. However, this promotion will be ending by 31st December 2018.

Regular registrations and renewals are pegged at $11.99, a good $3 more expensive than Dynadot and Namesilo.

Domain name privacy is completely free of charge. The domain redemption fee of $125 for Moniker is the 2nd highest on our list (The first being $175 for Hover). So, it’s advisable to pay attention to those domain renewal notifications or better still, enable auto-renewal for all your domain names at Moniker.

With a great interface, a responsive support and a host of other features, Moniker is one of the great places to go for cheap domain registrations.

Yes, the good old Google. With close to 2 million domain names, this conglomerate ventured into the domain name industry in 2015. There are no bell and whistles with Google. What you see is basically what you get. No promos, no ‘special’ deals; just straight up pricing.

We ranked Google Domains at number 6 of the domain registrars with cheap domain registrations. Google offers .com domain registration, renewal and transfer at $12. To restore a domain at Google, you’ll have to pay a redemption fee of $100. Additionally, you get free domain privacy for as long as your domain is registered with them.

One downside is that Google Domains is still in its Beta stage. Hence, the service isn’t yet available for all locations. So, if your location is unavailable, you might have to choose a billing address in an available country. Hopefully, we hope this changes soon.

Another downside to Google Domains is the limited offer of domain extensions compared to other registrars on this list. Extensions like .mobi and .tv are not available at Google Domains. Hence, it’s advisable to check their list of available domain extensions before signing up especially if you think you might venture into other extensions outside the usual .com, .org etc.

Namecheap domain registrar

Started in 2000, NameCheap has been in the domain name industry for 18 years. This ICANN accredited company has been providing services at cost-effective prices both for webhosting, SSL and domain registration. With over 6 million domains in its portfolio, Namecheap is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the domain name industry.

However, Namecheap isn’t the cheapest place to register a domain name. Finding itself at number 7, Namecheap offers 1st year cheap domain registrations at $10.98 and subsequent renewals at $12.98.

So, how come Namecheap isn’t above Google’s $12 on our list? With Namecheap, there’s the pesky little ICANN fee of $0.18 to contend with. Hence, this brings their actual prices to $11.16 for registration and $13.98 for renewals which is higher than Google domains.

Transfer fees and redemption fees are set at $9.69 (plus $0.18 ICANN fee) and $101.86 respectively. Their redemption fee is the 3rd highest on this list behind Hover and Moniker. So, it’s advisable not to let your domain names expire unless you don’t need them anymore.

Initially, Namecheap used to offer free Whois protection for the first year alone and subsequent renewals at $2.88. However, last week, Namecheap announced that they are now offering privacy for life as long as the domain is registered at Namecheap

Godaddy domain registrar

The Daddy of them all. GoDaddy happens to be the world’s largest domain name registrar with over 57 million domains globally.

However, size doesn’t necessarily mean cheap or best as GoDaddy’s prices can be quite steep sometimes. Hence, its rank at number 8 on our list of the best registrars with cheap domain registrations.

GoDaddy offers cheap domain registrations for .com at the promo price of $11.99 while transfers are pegged at $7.99. Regular renewal prices are at $14.99.

Domain privacy at GoDaddy is definitely not free as it comes at the price of $7.99, the highest price on this list. Redemption fees at GoDaddy is pegged at $80

Despite these prices, GoDaddy still remains popular as they have countless TLD and ccTLD domain extensions as well as other features like domain auctions, premium domains and a discount domain club.

Hover domain registrar

Hover is one of the popular domain name registrars out there. Owned by Tucows, Hover generally provides good value even though their prices aren’t the cheapest.

At number 9 of our list, Hover is one of the registrars with cheap domain registrations as they offer .com registrations and transfers at $12.99. Subsequently, renewals are pegged at $14.99. Domain Privacy is offered for free as long as the domain is at Hover.

Allowing a domain name registered at Hover to expire can be an expensive mistake especially if the name is valuable to you. This is because, to recover a domain name that’s still within the redemption period, you’ll have to pay a redemption fee of $175. So, it goes without saying that you should enable auto renewal for your domain name.

1AND1: 10TH

At face value, 1and1 looks like the cheapest option as they always have a $0.99 price tag on their domains. That is until you get to your cart and realize that you must buy at least 2 years subscription to take advantage of that which isn’t really much of an advantage.

At number 10, 1and1 is definitely not the cheapest place to register a domain name as other registrars on this list are cheaper including GoDaddy. .com registrations at 1and1 is listed at $8.99 for the 1st year registration and $14.99 for subsequent renewals or transfers. But then, that isn’t the final price you see at checkout as 1and1 lists the $0.18 ICANN fees separately. Hence, the true prices for registrations and renewals/transfers are $9.17 and $15.17 respectively.

Even though they offer free privacy for life and have the cheapest redemption fee at $40, it doesn’t change the fact that renewing a name at Namebright will cost you $8.53 while renewals at 1and1 is at $15.17, a significant difference of $6.64.

However, despite its position on our list, 1and1 is still a registrar that offers cheap domain registrations especially when compared to registrars like Network Solutions.
